After earning his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Colorado in 1985, Filley did postdocs in biomass pyrolysis (SERI) and organometallic chemistry (Colorado State University). He then taught at the Assistant Professor level at Eastern Illinois University and afterward became an Assistant Research Professor at the Colorado School of Mines. He has pursued a number of entrepreneurial endeavors in biomass conversion, biosilicon research, and oligomer synthesis. His work spans a host of disciplines, including mass spectroscopy, physical organic chemistry, organometallics, bioresource utilization, colloids, and combustion. Molecular biology and peptide chemistry are now Filley's chief interests, and the main focus of his company, Oligometrics, Inc.
